Where Apprentice Engineers takeoff

Mark, Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (Mechanical)

snippet heading

What trade stream did you takeoff in and when?

I joined the program in 2020 in the B1 Mechanical Trade Stream. We were based in the Newcastle Heavy Maintenance Facility, then the program was relocated to the new Melbourne Engineering Precinct. I moved to Melbourne with majority of the 2020 Apprentice intake – and I’m pleased to share that I’ve now graduated and I’m a permanent member of Jetstar’s Melbourne Engineering Team.

What is your highlight of the Program?

The exposure I had throughout my apprenticeship was exciting and forever evolving. I’ve developed a whole other skill set through my mechanical stream, with opportunities to work in recovery teams for AOG aircraft, not only in Melbourne but other ports in Australia. During an out of port AOG, you get to work alongside people from all over Australia who come together as a team to complete a common goal.

Who did you work with and what support did you receive on the Program?

Throughout the program, you have an Apprentice Facilitator who is always there should you need help or guidance on any questions. Also, working alongside a wealth of knowledge in the current AME’s and LAME’s is fantastic – the skills passed on are invaluable.

Advice for anyone thinking of applying for the Program or joining the aviation industry?

Do it! It’s the second apprenticeship I’ve completed in my life and I haven’t looked back. Aviation is such an exciting industry, full of so many different opportunities. And being a mature aged apprentice, I wish I’d done it sooner.
